When hiring a professional dog walker to walk your dog you should think about exactly what your needs are for your dog. Many professional pet sitters and dog walkers offer a variety of different dog walks or dog hikes depending on the personality and activity level of the individual dogs in each group. Pairing your dogs needs with the correct program is important.
If you are planning on getting a dog and decide on a puppy PLEASE plan accordingly with your vacations! As far as Pet Sitting goes, those little puppies are not the best candidates for Drop in Visits OR overnight stays. Plan to get a puppy when you will be able to commit to staying home and providing pet care until your dog is at least 5 or 6 months old. This will provide a secure home environment and a confident dog. For Dog Walking find a puppy care program for midday feedings and potty training. Happy Tails Pet Sitting provides this service.
Now that the rain has come, so do the ticks. As a Professional dog walker, I have seen my fair share of ticks. The dogs pick them up on our Adventure hikes and even just on our dog walks. Please be sure to use some tick preventative on your dog to protect against these awful bloodsuckers!! You can call any vet hospital for a recommendation, or just visit your local pet store. Here are some links to help you out. I have included a holistic alternative for a Vet Hospital as well.
I have been a Dog Walker and Dog Adventure Trip provider for 15 years!! We can take care of those dogs that need to RUN RUN to get their regular exercise! I love the energetic playful dogs that love to hike off leash in the open spaces on our Adventure trips. You will find these dogs behaving better, being happier and getting into less trouble at home when we provide them with a daily exercise routine. These hikes help maintain your dogs health by keeping your pets mobility and pets flexibility in use on a regular routine. Constant daily stimulation and puppy socialization is so important to having an emotionally stable happy dog. It’s hard to make that commitment to exercise your dog each day. Life is busy. When you can rely on a Professional Dog Walker it takes the worry and the guilt out owning a dog! Puppy Training and Dog Training are a natural part of my daily visits with the dogs. Lots of PRAISE!!!
I am a firm believer in the power of positive reinforcement. Being a professional dog walker for 15 years, I have witnessed first hand how effective this is as a training method. When dogs are barking and lunging at the end of their leashes, it helps to stay very calm and place the dog in sitting position (if possible) with focus on a treat rather than the passing dog. Lots and Lots of praise for even the littlest accomplishment. The idea is to give the dog something to look forward to when they see a passing dog rather than something to fear and have anxiety about. This does not happen overnight, but it will improve with consistency.
